Calendar
Day 1:
- Teacher describes an Integrated Thematic Unit (ITU) to the class and how it will be employed for their 4-day cardiovascular endurance exercise lesson. The teacher explains the definition of cardiovascular endurance as the ability of the heart to provide oxygen to the muscles during physical activity for an extended period of time. The teacher also explains that cardiovascular endurance exercise increases heart rate and oxygen use for an extended period of time.
- Students watch video on how to check pulse.
- Students practice taking their own, and a partner's radial pulse.
- Students are taught the formula for determining optimal heart rate for cardiovascular exercise (220 bpm minus age).
- Closure: Review today's lesson and preview tomorrow's lesson.
Day 2:
- Vocabulary Activity (explained in Assessment Section)
- Four Square Activity (explained in Assessment Section)
- Students are shown how to use and strap on heart rate monitors.
- Students are introduced to the Polar Gofit app which is watched on TV monitors on the wall.
- Students practice running in place to observe their individual heart rate on a TV monitor.
- Closure: Review today's lesson and preview tomorrow's lesson.
Day 3:
- Tea Party Activity (explained in Assessment Section).
- Quick Write Activity (explained in numbers 1. and 2. of Cooperative Learning Section).
- Closure: Review today's lesson, preview tomorrow's lesson
Day 4:
- Students strap on heart rate monitors and make sure they are showing up in the Polar Gofit app on a TV monitor.
- Students calculate optimal heart rate and memorize the number.
- Students choose exercises they are going to perform based on previous day's quick write activity.
- Students monitor heart rate on TV monitor for each exercise.
- Teacher leads class discussion on which exercises performed qualify for cardiovascular endurance exercise and why.
- Closure: Wrap up unit by checking for understanding with question and answer session.
