Cooperative Learning Roles and Materials
Students will work together to discover how heart rate and exercise relate to physical fitness and health.
Activity Instructions (Activity done in the school Gym)
The teacher starts the activity by writing the definition of cardiovascular endurance on the whiteboard and going over it with the class.
The ability of the heart to provide oxygen to the muscles during physical activity for an extended period of time.
1. Quick Write (done individually): How physically fit do you think you are? What are some exercises that you can do to increase your cardiovascular endurance? How can you make your heart muscle stronger?
2. Students get in teams of five and discuss their answers to the Quick Write. Teacher circulates and adds to discussion when appropriate.
3. Heart rate monitor activity: Students are each given a heart rate monitor and taught how to wear/use them. They also learn how to calculate maximum heart rate (220 minus age) and that 75% of maximum is the optimal heart rate for cardiovascular endurance exercise (the Zone). Teams choose exercises to perform and watch their individual heart rates through the Polar Gofit app on a TV monitor mounted to the wall.
4. After performing the exercises, teams discuss which, if any of the exercises they chose, put their heart rates in the Zone and whether those exercises meet the definition of cardiovascular endurance.
5. Teams decide on an exercise that will meet the definition and put them in the Zone and perform that exercise together.
6. Post-activity class discussion
Team Roles
1. Captain: Oversees and moderates the discussion to make sure everyone is contributing.
2. Statistician: Records heart rates of students after each exercise activity.
3. Equipment Manager: Passes out and puts away heart monitors; ensures equipment is
well taken care of by the team. Assists statistician record heart rates.
4. Videographer: Uses iPad to video the activity highlights. (This could be a student who is injured or otherwise unable to participate in the exercises.) Creates iMovie out of video for presentation to class.
5. Spokesperson: Reports to other teams during post-activity discussion.
Materials
1. Pencils/Papers for Quick Write
2. Heart Rate Monitors
3. iPads (one for each team for videoing, one for teacher to operate the Zone app)
4. Polar Gofit App
5. Stats Form (filled out by statistician)
Heart Rate Stats Data Form
